One of the essential elements of the sleep mechanism is melatonin, a hormone naturally produced by the pineal gland when it's dark.

By secreting melatonin, the pineal gland informs the brain that it's dark and that it's a good time to sleep.

Melatonin synthesis peaks between 2 and 4 a.m. and then decreases during the second half of the night in preparation for waking.

In some individuals, this message no longer functions correctly, leading to difficulties in falling asleep or shifting sleep times. Resynchronization" can be achieved by boosting melatonin intake.

In fact, taking melatonin as a supplement helps :

reduce the time taken to fall asleep in people who have difficulty falling asleep. The beneficial effect is obtained by consuming 1 mg of melatonin before bedtime.
alleviate the effects of jet lag (e.g., when traveling across several time zones). The beneficial effect is obtained by taking at least 0.5 mg of melatonin before bedtime on the first day of the trip and for a few days after arrival.
