The body's natural hyaluronic acid is a key component of synovial fluid. Hyaluronic acid has unique characteristics that enable synovial fluid to adapt its viscosity according to what you're doing. For example, if you're sitting, synovial fluid will have a thick consistency to help reduce friction between cartilage. As you walk, synovial fluid becomes more elastic, helping to absorb the shock of each step. As a result, synovial fluid is said to be visco-adaptive.
In arthritic joints, hyaluronic acid levels are reduced. This means that synovial fluid can no longer adapt its viscosity as well as before. As a result, friction between cartilage increases, wearing it down and causing bones to rub against each other during movement. This leads to symptoms such as pain, swelling, stiffness and reduced joint function. Arthosis is the destruction of cartilage in the joints. This cartilage provides friction between the bones of a joint. Osteoarthritis deteriorates this cartilage. Osteoarthritis is therefore characterized by pain in the joints. The pain associated with osteoarthritis leads to stiffness in the joints.
