In healthy joints, a natural lubricant known as synovial fluid helps reduce friction between cartilage - a rubber-like cushioning at the ends of bones.
The body's natural hyaluronic acid is a key component of synovial fluid. Hyaluronic acid has unique characteristics that enable synovial fluid to adapt its viscosity according to what you're doing. For example, if you're sitting, synovial fluid will have a thick consistency to help reduce friction between cartilage. As you walk, synovial fluid becomes more elastic, helping to absorb the shock of each step. As a result, synovial fluid is said to be visco-adaptive.
In arthritic joints, hyaluronic acid levels are reduced. This means that synovial fluid can no longer adapt its viscosity as well as before. As a result, friction between cartilage increases, wearing it down and causing bones to rub against each other during movement. This leads to symptoms such as pain, swelling, stiffness and reduced joint function.
When injected into the joint, Synolis VA acts by mimicking synovial fluid. Synolis VA is visco-adaptive, adapting to your movements in the same way as synovial fluid. Hyaluronic acid (HA), a component of synovial fluid, is the thick liquid that acts as a lubricant in joints.
Intra-articular hyaluronic acid injection, or visco-supplementation, involves injecting exogenous hyaluronic acid into the joint.
In osteoarthritis of the knee, changes in the hyaluronic acid in the synovial fluid and deterioration of the cartilage lead to the release of harmful biological products that cause inflammation. Injected hyaluronic acid replenishes the synovial fluid and replaces the modified hyaluronic acid, lubricating the joint and alleviating symptoms. Hyaluronic acid injections can reduce pain in mild knee osteoarthritis for up to 24 weeks.
