The Orange tree we know, which supplies us with its delicious fruit, originated in Asia, and more particularly in China, where it has been cultivated for over 2,200 years. The botanical name of the sweet orange tree, Citrus Sinensis, alludes to this. It was only imported to Europe in the 16th century, brought to Spain by a certain Vasco de Gama... The orange is the 3rd favorite fruit of the French, who consume 11 kg per year per household: which explains our almost compulsory annual import of 500,000 tons of this juicy fruit... France produces just 5,000 tonnes of oranges every year, far, far behind Spain and its 2.6 million tonnes, Europe's leading producer.
