Perilla frutescens is an Asian plant known from Chinese pharmacopoeia. Its seeds contain a lipid component rich in omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. The raw material used in Périal® is a non-lipidic extract of seeds from varieties selected for their richness in active ingredients, which have been shown in experimental studies to modulate markers of allergy and inflammation.
The effects of Perial on allergy symptoms were studied in an open clinical trial. 20 volunteers suffering from allergic symptoms took the extract in tablet form for two weeks (100 or 150 mg/day), and showed significant improvement or even disappearance of sneezing, nasal congestion and runny nose in the majority of cases.
