Shiitake or "Samurai Mushroom" has been cultivated in China and Japan for around 2000 years, and was exclusively reserved for the emperor and his followers. Shiitake is part of the culinary art and even has religious significance. Reishi is a mushroom that grows wild in the deep mountain forests of Asia. Finally, Maitaké is a brown flaky mushroom originally growing on stumps or roots in northeastern Japan. It has been called "the king of mushrooms" in Japan.
