Gynositol is a foodstuff for special medical purposes based on myo-inositol and vitamin B9 (5-MTHF) for the nutritional needs of women with polycystic ovaries who wish to become pregnant.

Gynositol contains myo-inositol, a sugar synthesized naturally by the human body and supplied by the diet. It is mainly found in legumes, grapefruit, melon, oranges, almonds and walnuts, but these sources are insufficient for women with polycystic ovaries.

Gynositol also contains vitamin B9 (5-MTHF), a member of the folate family. Low folate status in the mother increases the risk of malformations in the developing fetus (neural tube defects). Gynositol's vitamin B9 (5-MTHF) is the biologically active form directly assimilated by all women. Vitamin B9 (5-MTHF) supplementation of 400 μg per day is recommended at least 1 month before and up to 3 months after conception.

Gynositol should be taken as soon as pregnancy is planned, and can be continued throughout pregnancy.
