Today, one billion people worldwide are vitamin D deficient (Vitamin D deficiency, The new England journal of medicine, July 2009).

Diet is no longer sufficient to compensate for the lack of vitamin D synthesis due to insufficient sunlight.

Indeed, the usual diet of people living in France provides low quantities of vitamin D (ESVITAF, 1986; Hercberg et al., 1994).
