Griffonia is a shrub belonging to the legume family, growing up to 3 meters high. Griffonia seeds are eaten as a vegetable by local populations in Central and West Africa.

The seeds contain a molecule(5-HYDROXYTRYPTOPHANE) which contributes to the body's production of serotonin. All parts of the plant can be used, but the highest concentration of 5-HTP is found in the seeds.
