A distinction is made between omega-3s of plant origin (alpha-linolenic acid) and omega-3s of marine origin (EPA/DHA).
The latter are only properly supplied by twice-weekly consumption of oily fish (tuna, salmon, mackerel, sardines, herring, anchovies, etc.). Adults need 250 mg EPA and 250 mg DHA. They are recognized as contributors to normal heart function. They are also precursors of anti-inflammatory lipid mediators.
