What is horse chestnut?

The horse chestnut is a large tree, which can grow to over 30 m in height and live to over 250 years. It is found throughout the temperate regions of Europe, Asia and North America. It has characteristic palm-shaped leaves with 5 or 7 serrated leaflets. Flowers are white or pink. The fruit is a tough, spiny capsule containing one to four seeds. The globular seed has a brown rind, marked by a whitish spot. Not to be confused with the chestnut Castanea sativa Mill.

We have selected horse chestnut trees that grow in France, particularly in the Ardèche region. Horse chestnut seeds are harvested when ripe, usually in autumn.
