Who doesn't know the virtues of honey? An article published in October 2015 in the Clinical Otolaryngology journal of the Dutch Society of Otolaryngology, reviewed a body of research published over the last two decades on the value of propolis, honey in ENT. A total of 36 studies were identified, revealing their usefulness in this field.

Propolis is a resin used by bees to protect the hive against mold and germs. Its name "propolis" is a Latin word taken from ancient Greek, meaning "protective entrance to the city (of bees)". Propolis is a plant material that bees collect from plants, mainly from buds. It is mixed with wax and salivary secretions.
Propolis is extolled in numerous books on ancient medicine. In fact, it was already used by man in ancient times. In The Georgics, Virgil describes three kinds of propolis, "the juice more unctuous than wood gum". He mentions how small bees, unable to carry a slug that had entered the hive, embalmed it with propolis to prevent its corpse from infecting the hive. Pliny, in his Histoire Naturelle, explains that it was used in wax form to remove spikes and foreign bodies from wounds; and that it helps heal ulcers and resolve tumors.
Its composition explains its virtues. Its resin contains numerous antioxidant and anti-inflammatory flavonoids, antiseptic phenols and essential oils (nearly 10%). It can be used in extract form: the propolis is then dissolved in alcohol (10% in HATM), eliminating the wax and retaining only the antiseptic substances.
