With age, and particularly in women, skin dries out and cracks appear on the heel. This phenomenon can be explained by a combination of two mechanisms: alteration of the lipid intercellular cement and the menopause, which leads to reduced activity of the sweat glands. This reduces the supply of water to the skin's surface, causing the epidermis to dry out. One solution is to keep hygroscopic compounds (glycerine, polysaccharides) in contact with the epidermis to retain water.
