Lutein is one of three carotenoids, pigments found in very high concentration in the retina of the eye, more specifically in the macula. The yellow color of the macula is attributable to the presence of lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin. These carotenoids are not synthesized by humans, and must therefore be supplied by the diet.
