Milk thistle leaves are spotted with white. These spots are associated with a lovely legend from the Middle Ages: the Virgin Mary, wanting to hide the infant Jesus from Herod's soldiers, concealed him under the leaves of a Milk Thistle. A few drops of milk fell from her bosom onto the leaves, which have remained visible ever since.

The fruit of the Milk Thistle is reputed to contain silymarin, a complex of three compounds characteristic of this plant: silychristin, silybin and silydianin.

Milk thistle is used to help reduce digestive discomfort. In particular, it is known to protect liver functions and contribute to healthy liver function.
